The humble product bread has been an indicator to watchdogs, politicians and economists for many years to gauge the health of a political and economic systems of nations. With the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces this has not only be traumatizes for many fleeing their homes but as the world watches we also lives that trauma – much like reckoning with our lives and systems of oppression at the height of the BLM movement during the pandemic.

This war will have global economic impact and the indictor to watch is the price of wheat/bread. Russia and Ukraine supple a third of the global supply of wheat, also ammonium nitrate, natural gas, oil all are priced in with the price of bread. The sanctions (throughout 2022) on Russian goods like ammonium nitrate (commonly used in fertilizer) will start to create global famine as global stockpiles dry up and no new crops being planted now. This will vastly effect poorer countries.

This series of works chooses to not look at the war through tradition photojournalism but through our everyday products that we need. The symbol of bread is the symbol of life within the Western gaze but many other cultures share the same symbolism. It is when we break bread with friends, family, lovers and strangers is when we truly start to understand each other the joys, pain and in many cases differences. Through this breaking of bread we as a collective conscientiousness can start to move forward and build a better future.
